The college gained university status, under its current name, on 1 September 1995, and permanent provision for the university was made by the University of Technology, Jamaica Act 27, which became law on 29 June 1999. Health
University Hospital of the West Indies (7km)
The University Hospital of the West Indies is an internationally recognized academic institution with 579 beds which continues to facilitate the clinical training of health care professionals. This type A regional referral hospital has over time expanded its services to meet the health needs of the region. Cutting edge technology is used in the provision of services thus ensuring excellence in teaching, research, and patient care. To ensure that the Hospital provides a high standard of care and services, many departments, research units and casualty services were established. Medicine, Surgery, Paediatric, Radiology and Anaesthetic Departments were subsequently established. Between 1961 and 1963, the hospital opened five new operating theatres, a 75-bedded Paediatric block and a 40-bassinet nursery, which was attached to an expanded Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit. Transportation
Public Transportation (5m)
In the capital city, Kingston, large, air-conditioned luxury coaches run regularly on popular routes. These are easily accessible and comfortable to use. Outside the capital, the public transport services aren’t as regular, or fancy. Most of us islanders use the buses, minibuses, and route taxis to get around and we’d love for you to join us! For traveling between towns, minibuses are the way to go, and certainly make for an interesting experience. Along the way, you will see – and hear – the real Jamaica. But prepare to compete for a seat with luggage of varying sizes and contents. On longer trips, passengers almost become a community; somehow the shared experience of being so close to a complete stranger may create an unspoken bond. Each town had a designated bus park, and although the destination stands are rarely marked, the conductor will find you. Keep your luggage close to you and be sure to check fares and destination with the driver before you board. A “route taxi” has a designated course, pick-up, and drop-off zones. They are the cheapest and fastest way to get from place to place, and always one just around the corner. Just stick out your hand, and wave.
Bob Marley Museum (3km)
The Bob Marley Museum is the former home of the reggae legend. Bob’s home is filled with rich memories and treasured mementos, which seek to preserve the life and accomplishment of this great Jamaican and outstanding musician. Enter the Museum and allow yourself to be enveloped with the sights and sounds of Bob, as you take a guided tour of this Jamaican Heritage Site. The friendly, charming and knowledgeable guides will escort you through the grounds, which include the main house, exhibition hall, theatre, gift shops and the One Love Café. All the original rooms have been kept as they were when Bob lived here to ensure authenticity. The displays include a life-size 3-dimensional hologram of Bob from the One Love Peace Concert in 1978, his Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, his personal recording studio, his bedroom, favourite clothing, a vast array of gold and platinum records received from all around the world, as well as the costumes of his backup singers, the I-Threes. The air-conditioned theatre boasts modern state-of-the-art projection equipment, where live performances of Bob are showcased to each guided tour. The One Love Café serves Marley inspired recipes and juices, and you will find a variety of Bob Marley souvenir items available at the Bob Marley Gift Shop.
Hope Gardens (4km)
History: The Royal Botanical Gardens, commonly called "Hope Gardens", occupies 200 acres of land in the Ligunaea Plains of urban St Andrew. The gardens were established in 1873 on a section of land from the estate of Major Richard Hope, one of the original English colonisers who arrived with the invading force of Penn and Venables. Today the gardens are the largest public green space in the Kingston metropolitan region, and are home to Jamaica's most popular collection of endemic and exotic botanical collections. Of particular interest is the Cassia Siamea grove by the main entrance, which was planted in 1907, and the other mini-gardens within the park - notably the cacti garden, with its rare varietals; the bougainvillea walk with its magnificent explosions of tropical colours; the annual gardens, with numerous species of exotic flowers; the sunken gardens and the lily pond. Local Flavour: Most of the plants and trees, particularly the mango and various spice species found here and in the gardens at Bath, originally came from a captured French ship on its way from Mauritius to Hispaniola in 1782. It is still highly unclear as to where exactly the plants went, but we do know that the Receiver General, one Mr Hinton East, owned and operated a garden near to the gardens at Hope. Since all cargo entering the country had to pass through his hands and be cleared by his office, it is not surprising that years after the fact, the whole collection was deposited in Mr East's garden which later was transplanted to the Hope Estate. Famous For: There are many rare and beautiful species of tropical plants and trees at the Royal Botanical Gardens, including the Hibiscus elatus (blue mahoe), the national tree of Jamaica. Blue mahoe is a small spreading tree with flowers that open in primrose colour in the morning and change to orange and deep red as the day advances. Don't Miss: The Amphitheatre, where the Honourable "Miss Lou" Louise Bennett-Coverly, a famous Jamaican folklorist, poet and storyteller, used to hold Saturday morning tapings of her famous TV show, Ring Ding. The Hope Gardens occasionally hosts band concerts by the Jamaica Military Band and poetry readings.
